Environmental Allergies

We advise the help of a holistic veterinary surgeon if your dog has environmental allergies.   The difference between conventional medicine and holistic is that it's artificial against natural.  I believe for every negative on the earth is a positive to heal.

Gut health and environmental allergies in dogs are closely connected.  Many dogs that struggle with allergies to things like pollen, grass, dust mites, or mould often also have an imbalance in their gut microbiome.  Supporting the gut can sometimes reduce the severity of allergic reactions.

The Gut-Immune system connection. 
Around 70-80% of a dogs immune system is located in the gut. The digestive tract is lined with beneficial bacteria that help regulate immune responses.  When this balance is disrupted (Often called gut dysbiosis). The immune system can become overreactive.

This over reaction is what we see in dogs with environmental allergies, known medically as Canine Atopic Dermatitis. 

How poor gut health can worsen allergies.

When the gut microbiome is out of balance

• The intestinal lining can become more permeable (Leaky gut)
• Larger food particles and toxins pass into the bloodstream.
• The immune system reacts more aggressively
• Inflammation increase through out the body

In dogs, this inflammation often shows up as.

• Itchy skin
• Red ears or recurrent ear infections
• Excessive paw licking
• Anal gland issues
• Recurrent skin infections
• Seasonal itching during pollen seasons. 

COMMON CAUSES OF GUT IMBALANCE

Several factors can disrupt gut bacteria. 

• Frequent antibiotic use
• Highly processed diets
• Stress
• Parasites
• Poor early life microbiome. 

SUPPORTING GUT HEALTH IN ALLERGIC DOGS
Improving gut health can help strengthen the immune system and sometimes reduce allergy severity. 

1. High quality diet - Fresh, minimally processed foods often support a more diverse microbiome
2. Probiotics - Adding beneficial bacteria can help restore microbial balance. 
3. Prebiotics - These are fibres that feed good bacteria inflammation and support the skin barrier. 
4. Omega 3 fatty acids - Found in fish oils, these help reduce inflammation and support the skin barrier. 
5. Reduce unnecessary medications when possible - repeated antibiotic can wipe out beneficial bacterias. 

THE PUPPY MICROBIOME MATTERS
The foundation of gut health starts very early in life.  Puppies develop their microbiome from. 

• Their mother
• Their birth enviroment
• Early diet
• Exposure to soil, grass, and natural environments. 

Puppies raised with good environmental exposure, outdoor play and natural stimulation often develop a more robust microbiome, which may help reduce allergy risk later in life.

While improving gut health can help manage allergies, it wont cure environmental allergies completely in most dogs. Management often requires a combination of

• Environmental management
• Veterinary guidance.
