Today Darryl and I went to a French bulldog breed assessment day. An informative day on the breed. These BAD days are held over all breeds of dogs and the point is that to judge the breed you have to attend these seminars first and pass the Exam also. Then you can go on the judging list.
The French bulldog breed differs from other breeds however as we are now told to look at health of the dogs, where as other breeds we are not looking for health issues. But with the Frenchie we must not award any dog showing any BOAS signs, skin conditions, or issues. So it is now down to the judge to award dogs which have the best features and not award dogs who show signs of ill health. As a breed the show Frenchie is much healthier according to statistics. It's unfortunately that the bad pet breeding that has escalated which has ruined the breed. It's time that breeders stop breeding unhealthy dogs, and remove them from their breeding programs. French bulldogs come in 4 colours.! Fawn, Brindle The Pied Fawn and Pied Brindle Any other colour Frenchie is not a pedigree dog. It's about time this is recognised. When breeders started breeding for colour, fluffy frenchie, hairless frenchie, poodle coat frenchie they lost sight on health of the dog. The amount of money they got for these new so called breed was ridiculously high. I still remember the so called Merle going for £55,000. Hairless went for 1 million. But now they have shot themselves in the foot, because they are over bred, over populated. The true French bulldog is now very small population.. Their expensive dogs are now not worth £600 and everyone and their mothers have litters. But did you know the only person who can stop all these bad breeders? Its not the Kennel club as they register cross breeds, its not the breed club and its not show breeders. It is you the buyer pet owner. It's you that is making these dogs sick. If you stop buying the dogs they wont like having 5-10 dogs running around their houses and will stop. So it's down to you the buying pet owner to stop this awful trade in sick dogs. The French bulldog is a precious dog and a loving and intelligent little dog. To cause on purpose harm by breeding dilute colours which in turn causes awful allergies and hair loss is such a shame. Please be mindful and stop buying French bulldogs from the wrong sources. So where do you go? We used to be able to say the assured breeder scheme but it's going by December 2024. So the only place we can recommend is now the French bulldog club of England and hope they can point you in the right direction of a quality dog. An internet search is not okay. Because some of these breeders are stating they are recognised colours, but the parents aren't. Only go through the French bulldog club for your puppy. Maybe one day things will change but I have a feeling that it's too late. Also did you know a chief vet is calling for the clamp down of breeders now because a massive percentage are not licensed. None are doing tax returns on the income they are getting from breeding dogs. So please use common sense and do your research. Remember it's up to us to ask the questions and its up to us to walk away from bad breeding.
