I’m sure everyone’s wondering what’s going on here, as I announced puppies were being born. So this post is to update you.
Rogue delivered her puppies and mum is doing fantastically well. She has this morning had breakfast, a big bowl of puppy milk to give her vitamins and minerals, scrambled eggs with meat. All bitches who whelp need calcium, as they all loose calcium when they whelp. So she has had a dose of calcium this morning which will be continued for 3 days. If they do not get calcium what happens is they start to act out of character. So every bitch needs it. I bet that is something you didn't know and we use liquid calcium. Some bitches can also have a glucose drop but hers is stable.
She has also had a nice walk outside to have a wee and a poo but the cold was too much for her so she come back inside quickly. Vizsla need more heat than any other breed I know, and if you do not keep the puppies very hot and the mum they can soon fade. So we not only have a log burner going, heat lamp over top but also oil heating on.
Because of the temperatures we had to bring her into the dog room in a big pen with lid on because too cold upstairs in our house, so she has the log burner just a few metres from her, but once this horrible cold wind goes we can get her back up stairs to the bedroom again.
I have not slept, as I’m having to also top up puppies with milk, she has for a start colostrum milk which is where the puppies get antibodies. But these puppies are starving hungry and where you get two suckling and the rest not suckling, this time everyone wants milk all the time. So every 2 hours day and night I am looking for the most hungry and just topping up so they are getting mums milk and a top up of puppy milk.
Rogue delivered most of her puppies herself then couldn't pass the rest. So off to the vets late evening. We got in at midnight with the babies. Our vet is the best vet in the area, and we are always so grateful to him and his wife who both came out so late at night. Me walking her around their car park to try and stimulate one to come down, oxytocin was administered which forces a contraction but only if the puppy is touching the cervix. Oh what fun. I had done internally several checks during the day. You learn what an open cervix is about, if a puppy is their or stuck. Helping one out if its big. She did have 2 big puppies but they are actually only 3 ounces bigger. They are weighed now from birth daily for first week, then weekly.
I haven’t slept, so I feel like a zombie, and I dont think anyone can appreciate the work load that goes into caring for new born puppies.
So yes we have a beautiful litter of puppies and mum is fab. Puppies are now what we call critical stages as the first 48 hours is when we can loose one for no reason. Well the usual reason is they haven’t formed right inside. Life is amazing that they can creat a living breathing viable animal with in 9 weeks. Its crazy and I wish us women could of done the same thing. They are still developing as they are blind and deaf at this stage and the only sense they have is smell.
Bedding is vital at this stage too, as did you know that the current research being done on Hip dysplasia suggests a link now between the bedding in the whelping box.? Lots of breeders put sheets down for the puppies which makes them slip and with the bones not set the slipping can cause damage at this point. Funnily enough we have never had hip dysplasia but we have always have a firm base which is anchored down. They can not slip at all when suckling from the mum. We use a very thick veterinary bedding, a special sort. Thats just gone up from £16 a sheet to £47. I sat and ordered more bedding sheets. We do not skimp on any product and they get the best. I also ordered a load of wormers that we will need soon and that was also a big shock. Where as my order would of come to about £80 it was £167! Brexit has really changed prices on everything we seem to need lately. So I’m all set up for wormers, vitamins, and everything required for the puppies development.
I need a few days now to look after the pups then I will be in contact with those people who are highest on the waiting list. We had a girl heavy litter which means some of you may decide to wait for Izzy’s litter. We could even have puppies available as I never expected so many girls.
One girl will stay with us as that was my whole purpose of breeding this litter. But if we loose any now then we may not as much as I need another girl for in 3 years time I also need to pay for the dogs upkeep. So fingers crossed for next few days that is all goes well.
I will register the puppies mid week with the Kennel club so that we can get all the registration numbers on documents that we will need.
If you miss out from this litter you will have the option to have one from Izzy next week. I have no say in who will get a puppy from Joshuas litter, I can only pass enquiries to him.
WATCH THE WEBSITE because if their is one available then you will see it on available page this week and contact me straight away to reserve. A deposit is taken, and until deposit is paid the puppies are all available.
