RAISING YOUR PUPPY
I take raising puppies very seriously, which starts many years before your puppy was even conceived. I live for my dogs, and take great pride in the quality of the dogs we own. With the help and support of my husband we show our dogs, in the UK and Europe. I am asked sometimes, why show dogs when you get no monetary gain from showing?. It is a platform to show the dogs for what they are, to prove they are some of the finest Vizsla you can see today. Its taught me the breed standard for each breed, its taught me the history of the breeds through seminars by breed specialists, its taught me why construction on a dog is important for being healthy. Through our showing we have learnt about different bloodlines. Our aim as breeders is to not only produce a well socialised puppy, whose been shown nothing but love since the day it was born, but to produce a healthy as puppy as we possibly can do. We do not send out puppies with out having a health check from our veterinary surgeon, and he provides a letter for each puppy.
It is not as easy as one would think to put to dogs together and you get puppies. Sometimes bitches do not ovulate, and Vizsla are rather unpredictable. But we have learnt now to get the optimum day by progesterone testing. So we mate on the optimum day.
We will only breed pedigree dogs, and we do not cross our dogs.
I do not have anything against people that cross their dogs together as its their choice. But I do feel strongly that breeders have spent centuries to create the breeds we have today, and why destroy centuries of select breeding.
All the parents of your puppy are health tested, the tests which are relevant for the breed. But we do also do private health tests which the Kennel club records will not hold.
We own Hungarian Vizsla, Bracco Italiano, French bulldog, and Pug. We are dog lovers through and through.
HOW SOON DO WE KNOW IF THEY ARE PREGNANT?
In maiden bitches( which is a term when they have never had a litter before) it is easier to see when they are pregnant. As changes to the body happen sooner. We see two weeks after mating slight changes such as the vulva stays more enlarged, the nipples remain larger. If the girl is not pregnant they all shrink back again. But bitches who have had a litter before it is not as easy as they may have saggy boobies from previous litters.
30 days after mating we can have a scan done on the girl. It is an ultra sound scan. Scans show pregnancy by foetus in a sack which can be seen. We can not tell sexes of the puppies until birth. But if we didn't scan the bitch, the following week is when the stomach appears to enlarge.
Pugs show very quickly, as do French bulldogs. But Hungarian Vizsla do not and I have had one bitch at 7 weeks pregnant and she had the tiniest tummy. We couldn't believe that 2 weeks later she birthed 10 puppies.
Scans are not reliable on numbers, but we get the indication of a small litter as we will see just 3. Or we can see a mass of foetus which indicates lots of puppies.
From 0-9 weeks we have birth. WOW! It still fascinates me that how
Can a life form in so many short weeks. Its totally bonkers isn't it. But when puppies are born they are still developing. They are vulnerable and blind and deaf. It is vital that no one disturbs the puppies and they thrive in a den like environment which is natural to the dogs. They are upstairs in our spare bedrooms. They can keep quiet, darker and no other dogs or cats will interfere with them. Every day I check over the puppies, handling them, picking them up. Weighing them, making sure they are thriving. Mum is given short walks away from her brood, she does not mix with the other dogs during this vital stage. We have all heard now of corona virus, but corona virus isn’t new. It has been in animals for centuries, and cats in particular. It spreads by contact, touch, saliva, clothing and shoes. This is how many virus transmit. Kennel cough can easily kill puppies.
At 2 weeks the eyes open, and the ears open. They suddenly are aware of noise, and their eyes begin to open. They can not see very well, and they do not really recognise humans. We are alien like to young puppies. Even if handled from birth they do not know that we are there to love them. As they get stronger, the acceptance of humans becomes natural. We are their food provider. Because they are still vulnerable we give them another week in the bedroom. They stand and stumble they can not always support themselves. It reminds me of a human toddle falling about.
Between 2-3 weeks is the time we can introduce weaning food. A paste of raw chicken and bone minced so fine it is a paste is given with puppy milk. They lap first as they have no teeth. Sometimes we have to let the puppies suck the meat from our fingers until they understand to lap from the bowl. It is very very messy. So lots of cleaning is done, and hygiene is important.
They sit and play with each other from 3 weeks of age, just sucking ears, pulling tails and gradually getting stronger. Between week 4-5 we see puppies becoming stronger, and learning to move better.
I can not imagine any other way now of rearing, but yes we home rear puppies.
We are lucky to live in a large property with many gardens and paddocks and
the space we have is great as our dogs can be in the home with us. Puppies
need contact, need constant checking, need to listen to the noises associated
with day to day living. So yes our puppies are 100 percent home reared with love
5 WEEKS AND VISITING
The day you’ve been waiting for. At 5 weeks you can come and visit your puppies, we know this is the most exciting visit to see the puppy for the first time.
We do an hourly visit, and the next person is booked to come in. So if you are late you could have the next person waiting. If you come early same applies someone else could be there. If the litter is big, I try to stagger visits over 3 days. As it makes me ill with my fibromyalgia to have 10 hours in a day talking and answering questions.
When you visit you do not need to leave anything with us. We provide you with a blanket for your puppy, a cushion, 7 days supply of food. When you collect you must bring a cool bag with you.
At your visit you can ask questions, but most people find that the questions come after the puppy is home. You will have the password to our online hidden pages which unlocks an extensive puppy information guide.
When you visit you will NOT know which puppy is yours. I will explain in the next section.
WE CHOOSE YOUR VIZSLA PUPPY
We reserve the right as always to keep the right puppy for us, which is a show prospective, and breeding dog. We get a variety of owners. Majority are pets, some want active dogs, some want agility dogs, some want working dogs, some want a show dog. When you see a puppy at 5 weeks they have no real characteristics.
They may well be asleep for the whole of your visit. Puppies eat, sleep, poop and sleep.
They can seem alittle boring. The puppy that is up and about in 2 weeks may be the laid back one, on the other hand it can be the dominant one. Their characters change so much. They also grow so much you wont recognise the puppy you saw at 5 weeks of age. Each puppy who wears an ID collar will have it removed and we will wash the puppies after you have left. Keeping puppies as clean from virus as we can do. Are we over the top? Probably but as I’ve said before alittle bit of knowledge makes us this way as we know how things transmit.
THE LAST 3 WEEKS WITH US
Pugs leave at 9-10 weeks of age. Vizsla 8 weeks of age. French bulldogs 9 weeks of age. In my opinion the last 3 or 4 weeks depending on which breed is the most vital.
Our puppies are now becoming little characters, and at week 6-7 I choose your puppy to which I think will match what needs you have.
Our puppies are fed on the patio to encourage house training as every puppy needs to go to the toilet after eating. They are allowed to go inside and outside as they like in good weather.
We have sun shades for summer, paddling pools, outside toys. They have inside toys of different textures. They are allowed to play on the grass, they are allowed to play in the gardens. They are given commands and encouraged to follow us and come to us. The bedding from 5 weeks is tissue bedding. Why this over newspaper or wooden shavings. Wooden shavings creates eye problems in puppies. If you got rolled over in wood shavings you would get it in your eyes too, so we do not agree with wooden shavings. Newspaper is good but for many puppies its not hygienic. Puppies have more skin infections on newspaper than tissue bedding. Puppies remain clean whilst on tissue bedding. It also encourages puppies to go outside more away from the tissue bedding. Which is the start of house training. So many people have told us now their puppy was house trained from the start at 8 weeks. How I dont know! But this is what a lot tell us. Its just us being constant with the pups and having access to the outside.
Puppies are also now having access to the house, and they see and hear familiar family noises. TV, Dishwasher, loud music. I can play babies crying and fireworks, gunshot noises. They see the vacuum cleaner going around. We take the puppies on a trip in the car. They also go to see our veterinary surgeon for a final health check. They also meet my elderly mother, my young grandson, and handled by close family friends of various ages in the final weeks.
At 7 weeks of age our puppies go to the vets for a health check. We feel its an important
Check so that you know your driving home with a healthy puppy. You will be given a letter in
Your folder from our vet, we also retain a copy for future records. This is important
As you can submit to your insurance company as many insurances wont pay out if your first
You will be given the date of pick up when puppies are born. You can come from 9.30am to 1pm on a Thursday morning, Friday morning, Saturday morning. Vizsla puppies must leave at 8 weeks as its detrimental to their social life to remain in the breeders home longer. It is a vital stage of development. Vizsla puppies traditionally lefts at 7 weeks of age because they develop quicker. But now the law on dogs changed they are not allowed to leave until 8 weeks of age.
Bring with you a towel, paper towel, plastic bag for waste. If summer time and hot and you have no air con and a long journey then water and a bowl. If cool you wont need to offer water. You do not need to bring food. If you fed a puppy on travel it would be sick.
You need to bring with you a cool bag for 7 days of free frozen dog meat. The puppy must remain on raw dog food for at least 2 weeks after it has left, so you should purchase some raw food also from www.cotswoldraw.com Their puppy range to continue feeding after our 7 days supply has run out.
You will be given a folder, and inside the folder will be a purple wallet which is the assured breeder scheme wallet. A contract of sale copy is inside which you will of signed at your 5 weeks visit.
The Kennel club registration certificate will be inside the folder, as well as the pedigree. Microchip information will also be inside.
Your puppy will be registered to animal tracker data base, and a transfer code will be given to you on the morning you pick up. You have 14 days to transfer the puppy. By law all puppies should be micro chipped and belong to breeder first. To create a trail of where the dog has come from.
Your puppy will be weighed on scales in front of you, if covid rules still apply we will weigh and write weight on front of folder.
WHAT ABOUT COVID 19
Do not worry about picking up your puppy and social distancing. Our home is set amongst beautiful gardens with large open areas. We do not have to get close to each other.
The country is about to relax measures further, which is positive for our next litter from Brooklyn and Leya. This means we hope that you will be allowed to visit your puppy at 5 weeks, not just pick up only. We also have a grooming parlour we can let puppies leave from if necessary. At the moment their has been no further guidance as to letting puppies go. At the time of writing only pick up is allowed.
We have a page where some people over the years have written recommendations for us.
This is very kind and we appreciate it. These references show you what people think
first hand. It is now difficult to put you in direct contact with people, as under data protection
we can no longer do this. Things have changed drastically with the law on animals. But if you
go to Instagram you will find plenty of happy dog owners on there, who comment on our posts.
Photo to right is Vicky, she brought one Vizsla 5 years ago and loved her so much she came and brought another. What better reference could we give when people come back for another.
I WANT TO BUY TWO DOGS TOGETHER
I get asked all the time if people could buy two puppies together.
With the breeds we own, my answer is different for each.
I would never ever ever, ever, ever......and I could write that a billion times, buy two Vizsla puppies together. It will be your worst nightmare and you will hate them before long. Why? They egg each other on, they run away together, you can not train them together, house training is impossible.
If you wish to buy two Pugs together I will consider it. These breeds are much easier and they do bond together. They enjoy company. You do get bonded pairs and its very endearing how much they love each other. So I will consider selling two. But do not ask for discounts as I can sell individually and I do not need
to reduce price to beg anyone to buy a dog. I would keep them all!
If you wish to buy two Frenchie together I will consider.
Quite often I ask people time and time again if they wish me to answer any questions and they can not think of a single thing. Which of course is fine. Lots of people take dogs and they have no issues what so ever. But a few of you may need advice along the way. The Hungarian Vizsla is one of the hardest breeds I own. They are hard work. I do stress how demanding a breed they are time and time again but most of you do not listen, as you will think either, she is mad, or I can do this. Which again is fine. But I am here for advice if you need it.
You can whats app me, and I will either reply or ring you back. I will not email back, I do not do advice on social media.
If it is medical advice you are after, then I have to refer you to your vet.
With Pugs and French bulldogs, I have never had one person yet feel they need advice. This is because they are easy peasy breeds to own.
