Weimaraner Information.
Silver Grey ghost dog.I have created this page with the hope to help you understand the dog called Weimaraner. I hope it is helpful to you. Weimaraners are a large game hunting dog which originated from Germany. With protection of the hunt masters only the aristocrat owned them originally. They were developed and fine tuned into the Hunt, Point and Retrieve breed, They were clever and excelled at collecting game.

The Weimaraner is a breed of dog which really stands out with the WOW factor when you see them. Their silver grey or silver coat makes them look unique. They attract a lot of people who want a nice dog on the end of the lead.
I literally walked into our vets today and someone came straight up to me saying I love the colour of your dog. They are striking and the coat colour is something which makes the breed stand out. They are also known as the grey ghost dog.
Years ago the breed was not popular as their were not many bred, but now today they are seen more often and most people know what they are. Their popularity grew in the 1990's.
Now during my lifetime of owning them a new colour appeared which they call the Blue Weimaraner. Sadly this is not altogether correct. The German club did a DNA test on the Blue Weimaraner and found it had the Black Labrador gene. Their was never a Labrador in the make up of the Weimaraner which in the first place created the breed. So this is a newer introduction.
Did you know their is a long haired Weimaraner? Very different in looks and very appealing with beautiful puppies. They are not given a fair chance in the UK show ring, even though judged along side their short counterparts.
The Slovakian rough haired pointer looks like at a glance a wire haired Weimaraner. It is a different breed but it has Weimaraner in its make up.
The breed is not an easy one to own, and I do not think a first time owner should have one. As they need an experienced trainer. The breed needs a good 2 hours exercise every day to keep his mind entertained. If they are not worn out they can develop boredom and destruction. They are a strong dog with strong jaws and can easily do a lot of damage. A tired dog will be a happier dog. This means good exercise and off lead running. They are not as agile as a Vizsla and not as quick.
The Weimaraner is a breed which can please itself therefore training is so important in a training school. Not just 1 on 1 training. They need to be trained in a distracted environment. They will be a better dog for training, and an easier dog to own.
They are not a breed which can be left home alone, they really can suffer with separation anxiety. Therefore if you do have to work a few hours a day sometimes its better to let the dog go to a dog creche or build a small run in the garden and have a kennel where the dog can get in if it rains. But if you do not train a Weimaraner from 8 weeks to be in a kennel it can be very noisy. So it its training to be left in one.
The breed was a dog that was bred to kill wild boar. Now lets think about this animal for a moment. It has tusks, and is vicious yet this dog could kill it. This shows us we must not neglect their training. They are quite capable of chasing sheep.
This is not the breed for everyone. Anyone who says different is either trying to sell a dog ha ha. Or does not understand the breed. They can frustrate you and they can be noisy. Please choose your breeder wisely. Choose your puppy from established Kennel club assured breeders because new breeders will never be able to give you the advice you will need as the dog grows up. They are not the breed for everyone. They are also large dogs and not suitable for small homes.
Weimaraners are good with children, and quite tolerant, but if your children menace or push the dog too much it could retaliate so use common sense and if you have children put the dog in the garden for a while whilst the kids are playing. Use common sense as its not the dogs fault if they get tired of being pulled around.
In America they are in the sporting group. In the UK they are in the gun dog group. In Europe they are in group 7.
The UK Kennel club only requires hip scoring on the assured breeder scheme health test lists. If someone is not an assured breeder they do not have to hip score to register. The more health tests a breeder does the better for your puppy.
Health issues: As with all dog breeds be it cross breed or pedigree they will all come across health problems. Please remember dogs live to the age of 10-13. So by the age of 10 they are an old dog. Older people have health issues and so do animals. If you're unlucky your dog may have something much earlier. It is a shame but this is life.
Bloat effects Weimaraners and is one thing which you should read up about. No Weimaraner owner should have one with out recognising signs of bloat. Any large chested breed which is longer in the back and has a large rib cage can get bloat.
Weimaraners are predisposed to Mast Cell Tumours. All blood lines. Research has shown that genetically the dogs carry MCT but it takes a trigger. The trigger seems to be neutering or spaying. Research on other breeds came to this conclusion. Do not spay or neuter too early or at all is the advice given. I have written a paper on MCT which is for owners to read in our private owners section. With ideas on how to reduce its spread.
