WORM COUNT
Worm count is the laboratory who tests stool samples. Go to www.wormcount.com for lots more information.
We go to their website and click worm counts for dogs and a list appears. We can then choose from this list which type of test we want to do. I advise all my puppy owners buy one in and do it around 11 weeks of age. Worm count will send you a pot, a piece of paper to write info down on, plus poop bag. Envelope and all you have to do is put a stamp on it. Then do another test three months later. If still clear you can then space it out alittle further.
The first stool of the day you collect, just alittle and pop in the pot. Pop it inside and then fill in the form where you want results to go back too. Send it off and youll then get a reply with in a couple of days the results.
Here is a result of one of our dogs we had done.
When we look at the results we see Green which means none seen. So Maisie was worm clear. I can repeat it in 3 months. But as Ive had repeatedly none seen I have gone to six monthly. We tested her after her puppies left our home to know she is clear again.
If you live in a lung worm area you can do lung worm testing. I also advise all puppies owners to do a Guardia test also for the first test and then again six months later. Giardia parasite causes bloating, diarrhoea, bloody diarrhoea. This is cured by Panacur Granules, but if your dog is poorly then go to your vet who will also prescribe metronidazole antibiotics. Giardia can be caught from drinking from dirty water from the garden. Bird baths are often the cause of Giardia infestations. If you have a repeated infestation after treating your puppy then I would suggest go looking at your garden for possible sources. and remove it.
So why bother to do this? In a nutshell we are poisoning our family pets by the repeatedly giving of poisons to kill parasites. Why are we doing this if the animals do not have parasites. Here is a list of some horrible experiences your pet could go through by treating it.
All veterinary surgeons will want you to treat your pet monthly. But why are we doing it monthly it if the dog does not have worms. ?
These worming products are designed to kill the parasite, but they are not a preventative. So the majority act on killing the worm that is already hatched and there. So it is pointless to keep giving your pets these poisons.
We are now worm counting mummy dog. Before mating. We are worm counting the puppies at 3 weeks of age and 7. We are also worm counting mummy dog again. If all clear then their was no need to give the the poisons
What happens if we see a worm ? Well this is personal choice. Most people would then holistically treat the dog with foods which parasites do not like. But this is why I would give panacur to eradicate the worms. You can add into food pumpkin seeds crushed, garlic, and verm X. This may be enough for your dog to never have worms. But we do not like to give lots of harsh seeds or garlic to baby puppies. So we worm count, then treat if we see a worm egg. If this was one of our adult dogs we would then give additives to food to persuade parasites to go.
As with all parasites if you have children you may want to use panacur to quickly eradicate worms. Toxocara is dangerous to children and pregnant women. If your dog has worms treat and wear gloves around touching your dog if pregnant. Once worms have gone give a thorough bathing to the dog especially around the anus with anti bacterial washes like hibiscrub or Duo Plus shampoo to wash off any eggs, or segments you can not see with the eye. Also tell children to not touch the dog until the worms have been eradicated. Do a worm count again two weeks later after treating your dog to know for sure. Panacur has better results with so many different parasites than say Drontal which treats just round worm and tape worm.
