There are a few companies in the UK which do worm counting. We use www.feclab.co.uk but you also have www.wormcount.com On their websites is more information. I use feclab only because they do more parasites for £1 less. To me I save every penny I can.
If you go to their website and click dog worm count and order one. But there are other tests also which is advisable to do.
Lung worm test.
Giardia test.
HOW DO YOU DO IT?
They send a box and inside box is a pot, glove, poop bag or bag, spoon scoop, pre paid envelope, Form to fill in dogs details.
The first stool of the day from. your dog, collect a tiny piece and put in pot. Then fill in form, put all in the envelope and send that day. It takes about 3-4 days for results to come back to you by email.
Here is the result of one of our dogs we had done.

When we look at the results we see Green which means none seen. So Maisie was worm clear. I can repeat it in 3 months. But as Ive had repeatedly none seen I have gone to six monthly. We tested her after her puppies left our home to know she is clear again.
If you live in a lung worm area you can do lung worm testing. I also advise all puppies owners to do a Guardia test also for the first test and then again six months later. Giardia parasite causes bloating, diarrhoea, bloody diarrhoea. This is cured by Panacur Granules, but if your dog is poorly then go to your vet who will also prescribe metronidazole antibiotics. Giardia can be caught from drinking from dirty water from the garden. Bird baths are often the cause of Giardia infestations. If you have a repeated infestation after treating your puppy then I would suggest go looking at your garden for possible sources. and remove it.
So why bother to do this? In a nutshell we are poisoning our family pets by the repeatedly giving of poisons to kill parasites. Why are we doing this if the animals do not have parasites. Here is a list of some horrible experiences your pet could go through by treating it.
The point of doing a worm count is to minimise giving poisons which kill the parasites. You may go years between needing a product.
Because we worm count mother dog before pregnancy we know that she is clear when mated. This has a huge impact on her health as we are not giving her unnecessary poisons during pregnancy. Because even licensed products can have health risks.
If your dog has a parasite then treat. You can talk to your veterinary surgeon or you can buy a product online.
I highly advise puppies are worm counted and checked for all parasites because puppies eat anything. They eat stools from other dogs, they eat dead rodents and they lick bird poop. All these wild animals can carry parasites.
If unsure talk to a Holistic vet for more laid back approach and your conventional vet if you choose monthly treatments with vet products.
