Health - The health of dogs living with us should be of concern, and some worming tablets you can buy from vets may not even kill some of the parasites. But with a worm count being done you know just what is inside the dog. It's a window to look inside at the health of the dog. So not only can we target pacific parasites we as humans live very close with our dogs these days. They get on our beds and sofas, and we do not want them shedding parasite eggs onto furnishings. We want to make life as clean as possible. So by knowing the parasite we can eliminate properly.
Deworming chemicals- Yes to kill parasites takes a deworming chemical, or a natural alternative. But to kill them the products work in a way which circulates In your dogs blood. It is noted that dogs are becoming poorly from the over use of these products. No dogs back in the 1970's were given monthly tablets or 3 monthly tablets. You treated if you saw a parasite, which limited the use of products. Less epilepsy was seen in pets back then. The results on reactions from Deaths in pets to fitting and other health issues is quite shocking when you read the articles. So it's up to us then to make sure our dogs are having the best lives possible. This means reducing either chemical dewormers and we can do this with worm counting. If they're no parasite then why treat ?

There are a few companies in the UK which do worm counting. We use www.feclab.co.uk but you also have www.wormcount.com On their websites is more information. I use feclab only because they do more parasites for £1 less. To me I save every penny I can.

HOW DO YOU DO IT?
They send a box and inside box is a pot, glove, poop bag or bag, spoon scoop, pre paid envelope, Form to fill in dogs details.
The first stool of the day from. your dog, collect a tiny piece and put in pot. Then fill in form, put all in the envelope and send that day. It takes about 3-4 days for results to come back to you by email.

RESULTS - RIGHT
This is a photo of one of my dogs from years ago. Her name was Maisie Savage. You'll see <20 epg. Which means no eggs seen. Here at Silvestre we are so committed to sending out dogs parasite free, that we worm count all mums before mating, then we worm count them again after puppies have left. We treat puppies with Panacur wormer 3 times before you collect your puppy. Then you can go to worm counting and you do not have to worry about having a puppy coming riddled with worms. |

What symptoms have been seen in dogs that have had reactions to flea and wormer products?
OTHER PARASITES
A worm count will not check for Giardia, Coccidia and Lung worm. You have to do a separate count for each of those. Ideally worm count or lung worm count every 3 months to 6 months. Giardia or Coccidia every 6 months unless your dog keeps getting reinfected.
So how does a dog catch Giardia ?
Stagnant water, puddles, bird baths, water tubs in your garden. It is much more common than you think. Years ago it was said that breeders homes were breeding grounds for Giardia. Well not here as we Giardia test! But not all breeders do. But symptoms in puppies are diarrhoea, and bloody streaked diarrhoea. It can be constant or diarrhoea for a couple of days then it goes firm again, so you kinda forget about it. Then two weeks later it's back again. Your vet can treat puppy with either Metronizadole antibiotics or Panacur granules to treat this. Most Panacur treatment for Giardia is not the 3 day wormers, it is 5 days to 7 days.
Coccidia is common again found in bird poop, commonly chickens. But your dog could have eaten a rodent in the garden and hey presto! Symptom's again Diarrhoea.
Lung worm is caught by dogs eating slugs. Licking slugs. So if your puppy is prone to picking them up do a lung worm count. Signs coughing, lethargy.
By worm counting instead of using chemical dewormers you are avoiding the over use of these products which is also better for the environment.
NATURAL REMEDIES
One of the best natural remedies out there for parasites is Grape fruit extract. You can purchase off doggy sites, or Amazon.
There are a host of natural remedies which can be used. Which we talk about in our academy pages on worming and parasites.
