You cant speed up the process of breeding dogs. It is what it is, the dog is mated and then 9 weeks approximately they are born. We do not know the sexes that will be born, we do not even guarantee how many. Why? Because scans are not accurate. I feel like a broken record repeating myself to people. Once babies are born we know 100 % then what we have, and until that day life is a mystery.
Not a shop!
We are not a pet shop. We only sell to people who convince us that they will make the best home possible for one of our dogs. It does not work the other way around.
In 2019 I launched a new side line in my skills in making dog collars, leads, EM bead necklaces. This has proven very popular. I have stocks of many colours of paracord, and I’m now building up biothane colours. I have an instagram page and also Facebook page. I am launching very soon a website for the collars. What started as a hobby has taken off. Its so funny I now look at shop brought collars and think how boring they all are, as I’ve come up with some lovely designs.
Find me on facebook and instagram. Facebook name is @silvestre.collars and instagram is silvestre_dogcollars Follow me on both for up to date new products. It often takes a week from ordering to make as I buy in more products to meet what you require. Ive just held a sale today and my stock items sold straight away.
Thankyou to everyone who has ordered with me, it is appreciated. When Covid 19 hit and we didnt breed the dogs, it was helpful having a small income coming in to help feed the dogs. Small business relies on your help. Please share also my info with friends and family so that it helps to promote another order.
IN the last week I haven’t answered emails and they have built right up again. I am slowly going back and answering all that I can do. Since covid 19 lockdown the enquires for Hungarian Vizsla reached new scales, and I can not sit on a computer all day answering emails as I am caring for the dogs and busy. Last week we also had a council inspection which requires paperwork to be up to date.
So apologies to those of you that have written to me, but I will eventually get through them all.
Also we had pug babies born and I have lost a lot of sleep. We have 2 beautiful girl puppies. As soon as they have doubled their birth weight then I will consider talking to people and taking reservations on those two.
In 2018 the law changed on breeding dogs, for the welfare of dogs in the UK. Many breeders still do not have licenses as they do not want the inconvenience of getting one or the costs and paperwork involved. Many people have fear in getting one. Can I just say do not be worried, as they are there to help give you good advice on what you need to do to get one.
Each council has interpreted the defra guidance differently but our Council do require a license. I am very pleased to announce our license runs for 3 years and we have been rated 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Which is the highest rating. So very pleased.
Ive changed now our plans for puppies. For those of you thinking I will mate sassy in early 2021, Ive decided to mate her on her next season. She looks to be coming into season now any day. We had to wait as Sassy had a litter last August time, so we must wait 12 months in between. Now when she comes in will be a year from her litter date before we mate her. In my mind I had decided to mate her 2021. But now she’s kindly obliged to do it regular ha ha.
We should get a gap of 4 weeks between the two Vizsla litters which is great, because as one comes down from the bedroom in to the focal part of the home the other should be just having them in the bedroom. We have a very large house with many rooms and several bedrooms can be emptied and turned into an extra dog room.
All my girls have been so unpredictable this year, the worst really they have ever been. For example the first vizsla I bred had seasons every 5 months, we seem to find ourselves now with girls that go minimum 7 months to 10 months max. Its not just our Vizsla as my friends all have the same problem. Then when people enquire we cant give exact timings.
In 2021 I plan on mating Roux for the first time. But because her season came later than we hoped for its pushed her 2021 litter back, so could be now February time. Since the AHT went bust this took away my local eye testing clinic. I say local it was 40 mins away. Ive found someone doing a one off day in Norfolk in September time and have sent an email to express my interest. But so far I have not heard back. This is for Glaucoma testing. Since covid all health testing stopped.
So who else could have a litter in 2021! Well we hope Ripley. Timing could be May time, as I shall bring her litter forward instead of doing it autumn time. But I hope the shows in Europe has also started as we do plan on showing Ripley in Belgium in 2021 before her first pregnancy.
As with everything, all these plans may change.
As breeders which are members of the assured breeder scheme, we do health testing required for our breeds of dogs. But in 2020 we had covid 19. This put a stop to most health testing. I contacted the Kennel club and asked what we could do. We were told to go ahead and breed the dogs if the parents of the breeding dog had good results, and then when testing restarts we have up to September to get the tests done. But they expected an extension up to the end of the year. So we won't get into any trouble by not health testing a dog. The reason being no vets were doing the tests. No vets were checking the tests. This has now caused a huge back log of paperwork for vets to start plugging through. Luckily for us our dogs were health tested which we going to be bred summer 2020.
A vet for example takes an X-ray, charges the money for the X-ray. Then they get submitted to the BVA and we pay the BVA to score them. I understand the BVA are now starting to go through hip score results from February/March. We are also waiting for BOAS to start again as their is only one vet in our area which is an hours drive from us that will do it.
We are committed to the health tests when we can have them done. But their are back logs and we can only get in the queue.
Just remember their were no health tests required for many dogs breeds for years. So this is all new. Even today many breeders choose not to do the tests. It doesn't mean they have bad dogs, its just they haven't caught up with all the relevant information. But we would only advise buying a Vizsla from hip scored parents as this test has been around for a long time, unlike new dna tests which are so new that a lot of breeders haven't decided to do them.
With our Vizsla we know the generations are clear, because we have owned the breed for years, so this puts us in good stead for having clear dogs.
With Pugs the only test required is BOAS, but we have lots of health tests which you can see from our individual dog pages. Same with Frenchies only HC and DM is required, but we have done extra ones.
Their is no law to say you have to do these health tests, but we are committed to improving the health of dog breeds and this is why we do them. As the years go by another test becomes available.
All the tests we do are costly, and it involves a whole day away from home doing the tests. So when your looking at a health tested parents to a puppy, the breeder has spent already a lot of money in doing the health tests. This is what increases the price of puppies. We have noted that food has gone up, veterinary has gone up, the BVA has gone up since we last had a dog hip scored and so on. We can only hold prices for a certain amount of time, then we have to increase costs of the puppy to cover the costs of the treatments.
The Animal health trust who did our Glaucoma testing and DNA for CA in vizsla have gone bust. So we are having to seek out other places which are much further away to travel too.
I hope all the vets and labs, and BVA is back to normal by October time. That would be great, but at this time, we are just waiting waiting for things to get done.
I think talking from the heart about the vizsla puppy will be helpful for some who are looking to own this as a dog breed. I have to be honest with you as I want to prepare you. We see cute photos on facebook and instagram, and u tube. Everyone falls in love with the breed. We can even meet up with Vizsla and it wont really prepare you for the struggle ahead. When we meet up with adult vizsla we do not see the breed at their worst or most difficult point. Generally you are seeing well behaved dogs. Owners will tell you what the breed is like, but you wont really be listening because all you see is the trained dog in front of you. I began to realise people coming to visit my dogs pre having a puppy was a waste of time, because my dogs go through intensive training from 8 weeks to 6 months. So when people come to see well trained dogs they arent seeing the breed at their worst point. The worst point is two days after you own the dog. For a start the puppy goes home, subdued! It is scared and not sure. It will be cautious, some come out of their shell quickly but exploring carefully as they are investigating their new home. They sleep on the floor where they fall or on your lap. Sometimes the first night is even easier than the following nights. But the first night is noisy. They are scared, and this is why we tell people to take the dog to your room and put in a crate by the bed, or sleep downstairs with the puppy so he can feel your hands for comfort. A puppy on its own will scream. They are the noisiest breed I know. We started with Weimaraners and with my first vizsla litter I remember ringing the breeder who bred my girl and said at 5 weeks, my goodness nothing prepared me for the noise of vizsla puppies. She said, “I told you so”!. I realised in fact that the Weimaraner was quieter. The Weimaraner has other difficulties which I wont go into, but the Vizsla is a noisy breed of dog. I can only relate the noise to a howler monkey non stop. The reality is the older the dog gets we forget those early struggles. So after the first couple of days of fascination of owning a new puppy, the lack of sleep sets in, and then tiredness, and then for some regret they brought the puppy as they question will it ever end? It does of course but it can take up to 3 weeks of routine.
A puppy must start as the way you mean to go on, so people who work part time but take time off to be with the dog can often I still bad behaviours early on as they are with the dog too much. We must remember all dogs must be trained to be left even early on, because if you do not, then your adult dog will have behavioural issues. I’m seeing post after post of people struggling from here to the USA with seperation anxiety.
The next hurdle is mouthing, and many people fall at this next stage of reality. People who struggle the most are people with children under the age of 8. Puppies and children seem cute, but when puppies are snapping at fingers, legs and faces the appeal of puppies is less. Its like they change into vipers, or as some say sharks. Nothing prepares you for the biting. But something to remember is it is not just Vizsla puppies that bite. So many cocker spaniels, cockerpoo’s, Weimaraners and all breeds bite. Its a natural process whilst the dog is teething and learning what it can do and cant do. It is up to us to teach the dog what they are allowed to bite.
Once you have got to 14-16 weeks its starting to get worse but by then you will be going to your first puppy school and your puppy will start to have more to think about, starting walks which again will help wear the puppy out. Buy a snuffle mat, or lick mats, and give your puppy something to think about. Vizsla puppies in particular need to have their brain entertained. They are not a boring breed that has to be said.
So thats an honest view point of having a puppy in the first month and the hurdles you will have to over come. They are not an easy breed, if you want easy then you really shouldn’t own a Vizsla. Being truthful myself and other breeders are now reluctant to sell to young families. Its too hard work to deal with children and a very active breed such as a Vizsla. Nothing you read will prepare you, nothing you see on the internet will prepare you. To own one you must have oodles of patience, and you must train your dog. An untrained dog is a nuisance.
Once you have over come the hurdles you will in fact own the most delightful breed of dog you could of wished for, and three years later you will of forgotten those early weeks, and you will be thinking about owning another 😀🐶💕
Over the many years in which we have bred dogs, I have seen breeders getting upset at their photographs being stolen online to sell someone else’s puppies. Breeders getting upset that con merchants are using a breeders affix as a point of sale, instead of going to the person who owns the affix. Fake pedigree’s being handed out with using good breeders affixes and dogs names. This stopped me putting my dogs pedigree names online years ago or the parentage, but over time Ive added the deals again, I suppose I got complacent.
So tonight its my turn. Their is someone who is using my affix as a point of selling their dogs, also using my name. People that know me know I can curse a good un, so I have blown my top, come back to earth, then decided I had better put this on the blog in case some other person gets conned.
What is an affix ? Its a name we choose and submit to the Kennel club, they tell us if they accept it, we then pay something like £70 for the affix then we pay each year to have that name with the Kennel club. It could of even gone up in price since we took ours up. Names are often linked to something you hold dear in the family, or names which join partners together, or children. Mine however was the 11th attempt of submitting to the Kennel club as they refused the other 10!. The only Two people that have an interest in the affix is my husband, and my son Joshua Savage, because if anything happened to me, they can continue to care and look after the dogs.
When we register puppies we use this affix in front of the name of the dog. As you will see from the names of some of my dogs. Silvestre Whoo Hoo, Silvestre Fortune N’Glory and so on.
Very select people have used my dogs at stud over the years. But they can not use my affix, they use their own in registering their puppies. They are also proud to use their own affix. But you could for example see my dogs name in the five generation pedigree. But it doesn't mean its a Silvestre bred dog, as I didn't breed it. I also have no control of generations, Or to the welfare of dogs not owned by me. We allow people in good faith to use our dogs at stud in good faith.
Pedigree documents are easy to fake, and you can lie about an affix on the pedigree if you write them yourselves. But the Kennel club document will have our affix in front of the dogs name. I have been told fake paperwork is given as K C paperwork also, does it ever end! But if you’ve never seen a KC document then you probably wouldn’t know what they look like. I will at some point take a photo of one of mine, and delete the address off by covering with a piece of paper, and remove the microchip number of dog, and then you will know what a genuine K C paper looks like.
Also just because you’ve met someone doesn't mean its me! The stories Ive read in the last two weeks on illegal imports from criminals is so sad. But they rent houses to present as a normal family. Of course you dont have a clue. If you suspect you have fallen ill to crime, contact the police.
Aren’t people dreadful that to sell a dog they feel they need to fake my name.
A big Thankyou to everyone who has text me in the last few days saying you would rather stick with us after brooklyn absorbed puppies. It means a lot that you have trust in us and we really hope to help you with our next girl or even one after that. Those of you on Leya’s list have been moved to Roux. Those who haven’t contacted me on Leyas list then I apologise but I am prioritising those people first who missed out from Brooklyn.
In the meanwhile here is a picture of Indiana and Yennefer to cheer us all up.
I had not told anyone through social media or the website that I decided to try and mate my Frenchie. She had 1 litter in 2016. From that litter a puppy went into the show ring. She has won a CC and RCC and her stud book number. In January 2020 she was the 1st place on the stag leader board which means she was top frenchie for January. We are so proud of her. I own her sister Cookie, and mother Bubbles.
Bubbles is the one who is pregnant, and we had her scanned today and she has lots of little babies inside her. So fingers crossed now we will have Frenchie pups for sale, which is the first time for 3 years.
The father is an extremely handsome boy, show dog, health tested. Great temperament, and in type that lovable clown.
I have had several enquires for Frenchies. If you would like to talk to me, then text me on 07584279384 and I will arrange a call back. But I do not sell the puppies for 2-3 weeks as small breeds are vulnerable in the first few weeks. I need to see they have doubled birth weight and thriving before I will take a deposit.
I do not sell breeding dogs. All my puppies will have a breeding endorsement on them. If someone was to show the dog, and complete the health tests, breed at correct age, and not over breed the dog, then I have no problem in lifting an endorsement. But they have to follow set rules in my contract before I will consider it.
So if you are a breeder which just wants a dog to over bred it, and give poor welfare, don't even send me a text. I say this because in 2016 I never had so many breeders which were trying to get hold of the dogs. Im looking for family homes which will cherish their babies for ever.
