I want to breed my dog. But let's look further at the complications of breeding dogs. Id love to say to you all it was easy but it is in fact one of the hardest things you can do.
I have been asked many times to please write a book. Maybe one day I will do. Because the books out there are not showing most of you how to deal with the things that go wrong. Yes it means vet every time, but if you have not recognised what has gone wrong then you'll loose your bitch. Breeding is not all pink and fluffy. Breeding is not all cute and lovely. Where there is life there is death. To do it right takes ten years and a good mentor behind you. Reputation is also everything. Why buy a dog off someone whose not meeting the legal requirements to breed a litter in the UK. Is it worth a prison sentence. Here at Silvestre every single puppy we breed we place a breeding restriction on the Kennel club document. Its called a breeding endorsement and when you visit us you sign a contract which states you won't breed from your dog. Because not everyone understands the difficulties in breeding. We will not lift this on a pet dog. So if you want to breed you need to enter into a contract for us to lift the endorsement. We do not charge to lift the endorsement but you are expected to health test your bitch, show your dog. If you have not trained your dog to show from an early age. you can kiss the idea goodbye. The Vizsla is not always fertile. Some have just 2 puppies, some can have 14 puppies. You need to educate yourself on everything that can go wrong so you can recognise it. Having 2 puppies your bitch most likely won't have enough hormone to birth them. A c section may be required. A breeding license is required, and you apply to your local council for one. Because if you sell a puppy with out a license, you can be charged up to 20k with a nice 6 month prison sentence. But this is something achievable unless you live in a property that planning won't change use from domestic to breeding establishment. Yes for 1 litter. It will also depend on the area you live in as to how strict your council is. It is by far cheaper and less stressful to buy a second puppy rather than breed one. You need to understand when your bitch has uterine inertia, or uterine torsion, or when a puppy is stuck and can't be born. How to manipulate a puppy and turn it if possible to get the head out slightly, or how to grab and hold feet and pull gently out with. out pulling the legs off. If the head is stuck further up it can be quite an ordeal. How to administer oxygen to your new born puppy. How to tube feed it, which is a tube you push into the stomach of the puppy and place milk in it, bottle feeding every two hours. If you can not deal with the things that go wrong you will loose puppies, and worse you will loose the mum. Not all bitches want their puppies. Some kill them. Some have them, get off and won't do another thing with them. Not all dogs want to be mothers. You won't know this until you have the litter. I know of a bitch that killed another dog in the home when she had the puppies as she was over protective. I know of another that killed a family cat. Because it happened to walk in same room. Not all Vizsla. We had a bitch years ago that hated her puppies. We had another who was so protective she would jump off and spin around at every sound she heard and ended up stomping on one and killing it. Ill never forget the experience we had when a bitch of ours had to have a C section, the uterus had torn so we had her spayed on the table. But the area inside burst a blood vessel and she lost a bucket of blood. Emergency trip to the vet to save the mums life and then having to hand feed 9 puppies. Hand feeding sounds cute doesn't it, but puppies can die as its not mothers milk. their are specialist hand rearers in UK who are fantastic, but they charge 2-4k as I enquired once. Puppies also can not urinate or do a poop themselves under 2 weeks of age. So if mum is not doing this its your job to stimulate each puppy every 1 1/2 hours to go the toilet. This is day and night. Breeding is not what you think it is. If all goes well I think its a miracle. My vet would agree with me and has told me may tales now of how things have gone wrong with other breeders. I can count 6 breeders who I know have lost their Vizsla bitch hours after a C Section. To breed a dog is easy but to be a breeder is something else. To produce top quality puppies and raise them right. To know how to avoid inherited conditions and to work with DNA tools that we have these days. So before you think of £ signs think about being stuck with all 14 puppies. Screaming your house down and the older they get no-one wants one unless its free. So their is a lot to consider. I remember helping one lady who said she would never do it again so long as she lived. Its great when they are 0-4 weeks and just sitting there, but at 8 weeks they are screaming the joint down. So before you say to me I want to breed my dog, think about this as not just something the mother dog does on her own. If everything ive said does not put you off and you wish to breed your dog then contact me for a breeding dog. But to buy a Silvestre and breed you will enter into a breeding contract at time of deposit.
