Most people do not think about their dogs ears, and others can be checking them all the time. So what do you have to do with ears?
With a French bulldog it is so obvious when a wax build up occurs, and you have to be gentle in cleaning them because everything there, exposed. So use a cotton bud with ear cleaner on, and gently wipe any wax away. I never pour liquid in the ears, even if it says on the product to do so. Can you imagine the sensation of cold watery liquid going down your ears, I freak thinking about it. You can also use a baby wipe with no chemicals on, so a natural one and wipe inside the ears gently.
So how often should you clean the dogs ears ? Only when required. The ear has a natural flora and should not be thoroughly cleansed with pouring liquid in all the time or you can cause unbalance in the ear.
In my notes in hidden pages their will be produces mentioned that we use. I am updating still the hidden pages sections. Bear with me as when I have puppies I have no time what so ever.
So how do you recognise a healthy ear? Its light pink, not swollen, no scratching, and has no smell coming from the ear. So leave it alone and clean only when the wax builds up which can be every few weeks.
So how do you recognised an unhealthy ear? It will be red, smelly, dark wax and lots of it, swollen from the dog scratching, blood in ear, constant pain in the ear.
So what causes an unhealthy ear? Yeast, or ear mites, or infection, or from a grass seed going down inside the ear. I would advice with any unhealthy looking ear that you seek your veterinary surgeons opinion first. They will be able to tell you if the dog has an infection for example as you should not leave infections.
A dog can have a skin infection for example which causes pus. A dog may hold its head on one side when it walks, or shakes the head. Often the cause of infections.
Mites is usually constant scratching.
Closed ear canals is a problem in some breeds of dog, but thankfully Ive never had it. I understand it is in french bulldogs and pugs. But so far not seen it. But if you have brought a puppy from someone and its ear canal is closed up, I would ask your vet for his opinion on best course of action to keep ear healthy.
But for more info head over to my hidden pages if you are a new puppy owner. If you can not see the article do not panic, it will be uploaded once again. Im trying to add photos of various ear pictures.
