Im sorry ive been slow updating this website recently. I am hoping that over the next few weeks I can do some proper updates. Life just gets in the way, and spring has sprung and there is always so much to do when you have land, fences, animals. Today for example I cleaned out the chicken house, cleaned down everything and put all fresh bedding down and straw for the chickens who are now laying lots of wonderful eggs for the dogs. Ive always loved keeping chickens, and at the moment I have just one cockerel and 13 hens. All of varying ages, from chicks who now have feathers, to old hens who may not live the next year out. I keep my chickens into old age, as they do lay the occasional eggs. Did you know the quality of the egg can change if you give chickens good quality foods. Our chickens are free range, and the only time they have to be penned is if there is bird flu. Our chickens have every single bit of scraps from two houses. Darcy came around the other day as she had been juicing, and asked if the chickens could have the remains of the fruit. One I was unsure so we quickly googled it and yes they could eat it. They scoffed it in seconds. I provide our girls greens all the time, I often buy cheap veg off markets and give to the chickens. My local farm shop laughs at Christmas time as I walk in and buy a huge Brussel sprouts stalk with sprouts on and give that to them Christmas Day. I find giving Alfalfa blocks hugely beneficial to rich yellow eggs. But fruits as well as veg. I give sunflower seeds also, and supersedes as treats. Chickens like to scrap in the soil so I provide lots of good things for them to find.
Do our dogs get on with the chickens? Yes the majority do, but I have 2 dogs I don't trust with birds. Rachel x
